June 27th Smooth Cruises featuring David Sanborn and Brian Culbertson - The Dream Tour

DAVID SANBORN

David Sanborn Smooth Cruise New YorkOne of the most commercially successful American saxophonists to earn prominence since the 1980s, David Sanborn has released 24 albums, won six Grammy Awards, and has had eight Gold albums and one Platinum. Having inspired countless other musicians, he has worked in many genres which typically blend instrumental pop, R&B and lately, more and more traditional jazz. He released his first solo album “Taking Off” in 1975 but has been playing the sax since before high school when he was inspired by the great Chicago blues artists near his hometown of St. Louis. By age 14, Dave was able to play with legends such as Albert King and Little Milton. He went on to study music at Northwestern University before transferring to the University of Iowa where he played and studied with the great saxophonist JR Monterose.

Dave’s rich musical past includes moving to California to play in the Butterfield Blues Band and performing at Woodstock with Paul Butterfield. Following that, he toured with Stevie Wonder and recorded for Wonder’s “Talking Book” album, played with The Rolling Stones, and toured with David Bowie with whom he recorded the famous solo heard on “Young Americans”. At the same time, Dave was touring and recording with the great Gil Evans, dividing his time between the two. After moving to New York City and studying with George Coleman, Dave started his solo career where he later collaborated with such artists as Paul Simon and James Taylor. Later albums have included guest artists such as Luther Vandross, Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell, Charlie Hayden, Wallace Roney, Kenny Barron, Christian McBride, and Eric Clapton.

In his three-and-a-half decade career that also includes numerous television appearances, Dave continues to be one of the most highly active musicians of his genre.

BRIAN CULBERTSON

Brian Culbertson Smooth Cruise New YorkBrian Culbertson began his musical quest at age 8 on piano, adding drums at 9, trombone at 10, then bass at 12. He grew up in Decatur, IL, loving genre-crossing jazz-pop artists such as Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Tower of Power, the Brecker Brothers, David Sanborn, Yellowjackets and Maynard Ferguson. A gifted young musician, his 7th grade piano recital consisted of all original tunes. He flourished in high school bands with his father, Jim Culbertson, as the school’s award-winning jazz band director, moved to Chicago to complete his studies at private DePaul University, then went on to compose jingles for clients such as United Airlines, Oldsmobile, Sears and McDonald’s in Chicago’s highly competitive advertising community.

At age 20, Brian self-produced his debut, Long Night Out (1994) and the hits and albums kept coming. “Come To Me, the 1995 album was his first album to top R&R and Gavin’s Contemporary Jazz charts. “Somethin’ Bout Love” (1999) sat high in the Contemporary Jazz Top 20 for nearly a year with the two No. 1 singles, “Back In The Day” and “Do You Really Love Me?” 2001’s Nice & Slow (with guest trumpeter Herb Alpert and singer/songwriter Kenny Lattimore) spent six weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart thanks to the No. 1 singles “Get It On” and “All About You.” 2008 found Brian blasting back after two years with the all-star blowout Bringing Back the Funk, a ‘70s soul music salute that he co-produced with the legendary Maurice White, and featured William “Bootsy” Collins and Phelps “Catfish” Collins.

In total, Brian has produced or performed on over 20 No. 1 records. And, with 12 albums and counting, he always brings his very best – and the very best out of others – in all of his broad-ranging musical endeavors.

July 11th Smooth Cruises featuring Phil Perry and Kim Waters

Catch Phil Perry and Kim Waters on Wednesday, July 11th for a super, music-filled summer night out.

PHIL PERRY

Phil Perry Smooth Cruise New YorkBorn and raised in East St. Louis, Phil Perry spent a large part of his career as one of the most sought-after backing vocalists in the music business. His bright, multi-octave range has played a supporting role on dozens of albums by such acts as Anita Baker, Boz Scaggs, Rod Stewart, Peabo Bryson and George Duke

Soul music fans first discovered Phil as lead singer of the Montclairs, who’s “Begging’s Hard to Do” was a moderate hit in 1972. After a brief stint as part of the singing duo Perry and Sanlin, he went solo in 1991 with “The Heart of a Man,” an album most notable for his remake of Aretha Franklin’s “Call Me.” His follow-up, 1994’s “Pure Pleasure,” is among his best and included fantastic remakes of “After the Love is Gone,” “If Only You Knew” and a 7-minute cover of the Spinners’ “Love Don’t Love Nobody” that was sheer magic.

In the ‘90s, Phil received increased coverage on Smooth Jazz radio through his guest work on albums by Lee Ritenour, the Rippingtons, and others, which inspired Windham Hill subsidiary Private Music to sign him. His Private Music debut, "One Heart One Love," hit the top five. On his follow-up, "My Book of Love," Phil began to take a more active role in songwriting and production, putting his personal imprint beyond the vocals.

Phil's last three solo albums, released on Shanachie Records, feature a breathtaking collection of beloved R&B/Pop hits produced by Chris ‘Big Dog’ Davis. "Classic Love Songs" (2006) and "A Mighty Love" (2007) were highly successful comeback albums, resulting in Perry winning the 2007 Soul Tracks Readers Choice Award for “Male Vocalist of the Year.” His 2008 release, "Ready For Love" is another lush production rich with Perry originals. The album hit the Billboard Adult Contemporary music chart at #4 in the first week of its release.

KIM WATERS

Kim Waters Smooth Cruise New YorkKim Waters has been heralded as “simply one of the planet’s best saxophonists” by JazzTimes Magazine and touted as a “romantic pied piper” by The Washington Post. The Maryland native picked up his first instrument, the violin when he was just 8 years old and later, at age 13 he found his calling on the alto and soprano saxophones. Soon after, he began playing in a band with his brothers, James (who he still performs with) and Eric, and his old friend, pianist Cyrus Chestnut. Over the years, Kim has been called on to perform with or open shows for top artists including Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Phyllis Hyman, Teddy Riley and Guy, and Gerald Albright to name a few.

Garnering praise from critics and fans alike, Kim is one of the top five best-selling jazz instrumentalists. His winning combination of sensitivity and brawn, intellect and emotion, coupled with his technique and soulfulness have helped him to score over thirteen #1 hits and over 20 Top 10 hits. Never one to rest on his laurels, the prolific saxophonist is constantly creating. For this talented multi-instrumentalist, music is simply a way of life.

In 2011, Kim released his 17th album, "This Heart of Mine" which artfully showcases why he has long held the throne as the King of Smooth Urban Jazz. Kim is a one-man band and plays virtually every instrument heard on the album from the saxophones to keyboards, guitar, drums, bass and vocals.

July 18th Smooth Cruises featuring Peter White and Euge Groove

Join us July 18th for the White Hot Summer Groove with Peter White and Euge Groove for a Smooth Cruise to remember!

PETER WHITE

Peter White Smooth Cruise New YorkGrowing up in the sleepy little English town of Letchworth Garden City in the 1960s, Peter White got interested in music while listening to the Beatles on the radio. When he was around 8, his parents bought him an acoustic guitar and he taught himself to play while simultaneously taking lessons on the recorder, piano and later, clarinet. One day in 1967 he heard Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze.” Having never heard such sounds coming out of his acoustic, he decided the electric guitar was to be the most important thing in his life. Eventually he got that electric guitar and furiously studied the works of Hendrix, Clapton and Page, but his dreams were put on hold when the guitar was burned in a fire (accidentally) set by his brother Danny. He found solace in his old acoustic guitar, having no idea that this incident, however tragic at the time, would prove to be a turning point in his life. He started to develop a love for the acoustic instrument, a feeling that continues to this day.

For over two decades, White has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape. He has kept smooth jazz fans worldwide enthralled by his spirited melodies, soulful grooves and inviting, instantly recognizable acoustic guitar tone. He’s always enjoyed finding unique ways to bring his modern sensibilities to cherished pop classics — and thanks to the smooth jazz format’s affinity for instrumental cover songs, two of the amazing thirteen #1 Radio & Records airplay hits he’s had through the years, “The Closer I Get To You” and “Walk On By” (from 1994’s “Reflections”), have become enduring staples of the format.

With over a dozen albums and numerous musical collaborations such as Jazz Attack (featuring White, Rick Braun and Gerald Albright) and his A Peter White Christmas annual shows (with Mindi Abair and Rick Braun, with Kirk Whalum stepping in for Rick in 2011), White is still going strong. In March 2012, he released “Here We Go,” co-produced with longtime collaborator DC (who has worked with George Benson, Al Jarreau, Bob James and Jeffrey Osborne) and features guest spots from Andrew Neu, Nate Phillips, Phillipe Saisse, David Sanborn, and Kirk Whalum. Jazzmonthly.com notes, “There’s so much to love on Peter White’s latest album, which is a must for fans.”

EUGE GROOVE

Euge Groove Smooth Cruise New YorkEuge Groove has achieved a string of #1 hits and a devoted following through his music which blurs musical boundaries and transcends age and race with his soulful and robust saxophone and a flair for R&B melodies and funk heavy grooves.

The University of Miami School of Music grad cites David Sanborn as his inspiration to pursue playing pop music. Launching his professional career in Miami in the mid 80s, Euge played in salsa bands, top 40 club bands and did the occasional high profile session date like Expose's “Seasons Change,” a #1 Billboard Adult Contemporary hit. Shortly after his 1987 move to LA, he wrote a track for Richard Elliot's “The Power of Suggestion” album, and Elliot recommended Euge to take over his spot in Tower of Power. Euge toured with TOP for four years, including a year backing Huey Lewis & The News. His resume grew from there to include recording, touring or performing stints with Tina Turner, The Eurythmics, The Gap Band, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Aaron Neville and Richard Marx.

“Vinyl,” his first single from his self-titled Warner Bros. debut, set a record by spending 27 weeks on the R&R charts, and ranked #24 for the year. His next release, “Play Date” garnered two more #1 radio hits, “Slam Dunk” and “Rewind.” His 2004 Narada debut, “Living Large” spent 68 weeks on the Billboard charts, debuting at #4 and was #25 overall for the year. The single "Livin' Large" was 2004’s #5 most played song on the R&R singles chart and "XXL" spent 36 weeks on the radio chart. “Just Feels Right” followed in 2005 and the first single "Get Em Goin'," was #1 for two months. 2007’s “Born to Groove” also featured several chart-topping singles. Euge Groove's Shanachie debut in 2009 included the #1 smash hit title track and the top five single “All For You.” With his latest release, 2011’s “S7ven Large”, Euge Groove has continued to captivate his old fans and gain new ones along the way.

July 25th Smooth Cruises featuring Najee

Be sure to join us Wednesday, July 25th for a fantastic evening on the Hudson featuring Najee’s superb balance of song-craft and musicianship.

NAJEE

Najee Smooth Cruise New YorkNajee is one of the original innovators of Urban Contemporary Jazz/Smooth Jazz. With two Platinum and four Gold albums under his belt, the native New Yorker was nominated for a Grammy in 1988 for “Najee’s Theme” and is the recipient of many other music awards including the Soul Train Music Award for Best Jazz Artist, NAACP Image Award, and Trumpet Awards.

Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to have worked with many great artists including Quincy Jones, Will Downing, Patti La Belle, George Duke, Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller, Joe Sample, Lalah Hathaway, Jeff Lorber, Wayman Tisdale, Dave Koz, Lionel Richie, Gerald Veasley, Jonathan Butler, MAYSA, Ledisi, and was part of Prince’s “Hit and Run Tour”.

Najee’s latest album, "The Smooth Side of Soul" released in January 2012 (his first on Shanachie Records), pairs the smooth jazz icon with special guests including Phil Perry, Jeff Lorber, Chris "Big Dog" Davis, and Pieces of a Dream's James Lloyd. The album is “highly recommended” by SoulTracks.

August 1st Smooth Cruises featuring Jonathan Butler, Warren Hill and Maysa

Catch Jonathan Butler, Warren Hill & Maysa aboard The Spirit of New York on Wednesday, August 1st and enjoy their music in an intimate Smooth Cruise setting!

JONATHAN BUTLER

Jonathan Butler Smooth Cruise New YorkBorn and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Jonathan Butler spent his youth under the shroud of apartheid, and official government policy of political, legal, and economic discrimination against non-whites. His escape was music. The youngest of twelve children, he began singing publicly in South African townships at age 7. Not yet in his teens, Butler’s talents as a singer and guitarist were recognized and he soon found himself touring his poverty stricken country in a traveling variety show.

After signing his first record deal as a teenager with British record producer Clive Caulder’s Jive Records, Jonathan’s premier single made him the first by a black artist to be played on white South African radio stations. The single won a Sarie Award, South Africa’s equivalent to the Grammy. His self-titled debut album also put him on the map internationally and garnered two Grammy nominations; one for the R&B-pop vocal statement “Lies” and the other for “Going Home,” a poignant instrumental.

Butler’s 2005 album, “Jonathan” is both rich in content and joyous in emotion. Though his musical abilities were able to take him away from the world he grew up in, Jonathan will neither forget the plight of people nor the man who ultimately led them to freedom.

Other releases include 2006’s “Gospel Goes Classical” with Juanita Bynum, “Brand New Day” in 2007, and his most recent, 2010’s “So Strong.” This latest album touches on his prior year with the loss of his mother as well as one of his closest friends, Wayman Tisdale and his support of his wife Barenese in her battle against cancer. Referring to “So Strong,” the talented Butler noted, “It’s been a tough year. It’s been trying and challenging, but we’re still standing.”

WARREN HILL

Warren Hill Smooth Cruise New YorkToronto born and raised, Warren Hill’s musical journey began on the guitar and vocals at age 7. In his first lesson, his guitar teacher asked him “tell me your favorite songs and I’ll teach you how to play them.” It was this simple question that set the stage for Warren’s entire musical future: playing the music that he loved.

Within a couple of years, Warren had an encyclopedia-sized songbook and a growing desire to learn more music. This led him to a music camp where he met bassist and hit music producer Matthew Gerrard. At age 14 and 15, the two formed a rock band, gigging all over Toronto. Eventually Warren began to incorporate his growing desire for the saxophone into the band, which led Gerrard and Hill to Rochester for a summer music camp at the acclaimed Eastman School of Music. Warren brought both his guitar and his sax, but once he arrived, someone played him a cassette with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Warren was instantly hooked on this undiscovered style of music called “jazz.”

As a high school senior and “A” student with a passion for math and physics, Warren had a tough decision to make. He was accepted into the prestigious program of Engineering Science at the University of Toronto. It seemed his “logical” choice was to sideline music and pursue a more stable career in Science. Then the sudden tragic death of his older sister made Warren re-think his life path. Realizing that life was precious and his time on this earth was short, he decided that he’d better be doing what he loved. So he applied to Boston’s Berklee College of Music and received a full scholarship. In his words it was the best “career” decision he ever made.

MAYSA

Maysa Smooth Cruise New YorkWhile Maysa is no newcomer to the music scene, her ninth solo release, 2011’s "Motions of Love" that boasts cameos by the legendary Stevie Wonder and neo-soul crooner Dwele, has brought the veteran soul and smooth jazz vocalist to the widest audience of her career. First gaining fame as the featured voice on British acid jazz band Incognito’s defining `90s hits including “Don’t You Worry About A Thing”, “Still A Friend of Mine” and “Deep Waters,” she then launched a concurrent solo career with the hits “Am I Wrong (For Lovin’ You),” “Friendly Pressure” and “Hypnotic Love.” With a sultry alto on par with Phyllis Hyman and Patti Austin and worthy of an urban mainstream following, Maysa has earned a loyal underground audience.

In 2008, Maysa’s “Metamorphosis” peaked at No.1 on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz top 100 chart and no.13 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. In 2010, "A Woman in Love", debuted at No.1 on the Contemporary Jazz Charts.

She has also collaborated with well-known jazz performers like Gerald Veasley, Rick Braun, Will Downing, Jason Miles' Soul Summit, Rhythm Logic, Jonathan Butler, and Pieces of a Dream.

August 8th Smooth Cruises featuring Rick Braun and Richard Elliot

Kick back with the music of Rick Braun and Richard Elliot and enjoy some hot brass plus cool vocals on the Hudson Wednesday, August 8, 2012.

RICK BRAUN

No one on today’s contemporary urban jazz scene knows more about the power of perfect, timely partnerships -- or what it takes to keep the #1 hits coming -- than Rick Braun. After launching the millennium with “Shake It Up” with Boney James and later hooking up with Kirk Whalum and Norman Brown as BWB, he reached greater heights in 2007 when he and saxman Richard Elliot (who were partners at the time with indie label ARTizen Music Group) teamed up for RnR. Their duet project immediately hit #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart and its catchy title track single was an instant smash, holding at #1 on Radio and Records’ (R&R) Contemporary Jazz airplay chart for over two months. After touring as part of Jazz Attack, then with Peter White and Jonathan Butler in 2005 and 2007, Braun and Richard Elliot teamed up for RnR in 2007 and toured in 2008.

Though the years Braun has also become a top genre producer, working with Elliot, Antoine, Willie & Lobo, David Benoit and Jeff Golub, among others. He set a record at the 2002 National Contemporary Jazz Awards in San Diego by winning a total of five trophies, including Best Male Artist, Best Album (“Kisses in the Rain,” which hit #1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart), Song of the Year (the title cut) and Best Brass Player.

Phil Perry Smooth Cruise New YorkEven those who have followed Braun’s rise as a solo artist since the release of 1993’s “Intimate Secrets” are sometimes surprised by the diversity of Rick’s résumé before he found his niche in contemporary jazz. While attending the Eastman School of Music, Braun and some classmates formed the jazz-fusion combo Auracle, which released two albums. His path toward solo stardom led him to some prestigious behind the scenes roles, first as a pop songwriter (“Here With Me” was a Top 20 hit for REO Speedwagon in 1988), then as a touring sideman with Rickie Lee Jones, Tina Turner, Glenn Frey, Natalie Cole, Crowded House, Tom Petty and War.

RICHARD ELLIOT

With a best-selling discography of over 15 recordings since 1986’s “Initial Approach,” thousands of live dates spanning over two decades, and one of the largest and most loyal fan bases in contemporary urban jazz, it’s incredible to hear Richard Elliot declare: “What I’m doing now, enjoying this upward trend in my career, is seriously the most fun I have ever had.” Then again, the multi-talented tenor saxophonist, composer and producer has been on one of the most incredible rolls since the 2005 release of “Metro Blue,” which debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart.

The Scotland born, L.A.-raised Elliot found his musical voice on tenor as a teen and landed his first professional gig touring with Natalie Cole and The Pointer Sisters while still in high school. Before joining Tower of Power (which began a stretch that he calls the most influential period of his early career), he played in the adventurous fusion band Kittyhawk and did some dream recording sessions with his Motown heroes Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops, and The Temptations. He later performed with Melissa Manchester and Yellowjackets, which found him hooking up for the first time with the legendary fusion band’s founding drummer Ricky Lawson.

Elliot was still on the road with TOP when he released his 1986 debut album “Trolltown.” Its success gave him the confidence to leave the band for a solo career, which has been rockin’ steady ever since.

He has performed in all-star tours including Groovin’ For Grover, Jazz Attack, Guitars & Saxes, and the RnR tour with Rick Braun. We’re pleased to bring the always-exciting Braun-Elliot collaboration aboard for these two shows.

August 15th Smooth Cruises featuring Rachelle Ferrell

Cruise with us on Wednesday, August 15th and experience Rachelle Ferrell’s stunning vocals along with gorgeous views of the NYC skyline.

RACHELLE FERRELL

Rachele Ferrell Smooth Cruise New YorkRachelle Ferrell began singing at age 6 -- which may have contributed to the development of her amazing six plus octave range. Her remarkable range also includes the ability to sing her highest notes in the “whistle register.” As a youngster, she also received classical training in violin and by her teen years she was playing piano at a professional level. While still a teen, she began performing professionally, accompanying herself on piano, singing both pop and jazz songs, and writing much of her material herself. Enrolled in Boston’s Berklee College of Music, she further developed her skills in singing, arrangement and songwriting. Besides her success as a jazz singer, Rachelle is also well respected in pop, R&B, gospel, and classical music. As an accomplished pianist, she has worked with Lou Rawls, Patti LaBelle, Vanessa Williams, and George Duke.

Blue Note Records’ Bruce Lundvall heard her demo in the late ‘80s and went to catch her live. While the demo included only pop songs, this particular performance was strictly jazz. Finding Rachelle’s command of both styles compelling, Lundvall signed her to a contract calling for one pop album and one jazz. She actually recorded her jazz album first, but her label released “Somethin’ Else” in Japan and Europe, where jazz had a wider mainstream following than in the states.

Rachelle’s other 1990 album “First Instrument,” was also released in Japan 5 years prior to its US release (where it was considered her debut album). She recorded it with Tyrone Brown (bass), Eddie Green (piano) and Doug Nally (drums) plus an all-star lineup of musicians including pianists Gil Goldstein and Michel Petrucciani, keyboardist Pete Levin, trumpeter Terence Blanchard, bassists Stanley Clarke and Kenny Davis, and tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Rachelle’s one-of-a-kind spin on now-standards like Rodgers & Hart’s "My Funny Valentine,” Cole Porter’s “What Is This Thing Called Love,” and Sam Cooke’s “You Send Me,” quickly captured the hearts of Japanese jazz enthusiasts and later US jazz fans.

August 22nd Smooth Cruises featuring Norman Brown and Gerald Albright

NORMAN BROWN

Norman Brown Smooth Cruise New YorkPicking up a guitar at age 8, Norman Brown was initially inspired by Jimi Hendrix but it was his father’s preference for Wes Montgomery that set Norman on his stylistic journey. After high school, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue music, attending the Musicians Institute where he also taught for a time. While playing with his own group in local clubs, and drawing comparisons to George Benson, he was discovered and signed to the fledgling MoJazz label, a division of Motown. His debut, “Just Between Us” was followed by the gold-certified “After The Storm” and “Better Days Ahead.”

With critical acclaim and sales behind him, he moved to Warner Bros. and released “Celebration,” which first teamed him with producer Paul Brown. The follow-up, “Just Chillin’,” earned Brown Grammy® recognition in the best pop instrumental category. Next, on “West Coast Coolin’,” he tested out his skills as a vocalist, a move embraced by the urban Adult Contemporary radio market and found him topping the charts.

Brown’s fan base has been expanding over the years. His compilation “The Very Best Of Norman Brown” was one of the best-selling smooth jazz albums of 2005 and 2006. He also toured with 2007 edition of his popular Norman Brown’s Summer Storm featuring a roster of special guests including superstar vocalist and Peak Records label mate Peabo Bryson, saxophonist Marion Meadows, and legendary keyboardist Jeff Lorber. Norman’s 2010 release “Sending My Love” with its seamless blend of pop, R&B and jazz marks his 8th solo album.

GERALD ALBRIGHT

Gerald Albright Smooth Cruise New YorkJazz and R&B icon Gerald Albright is considered one of the most innovative and successful artists of the last 25 years. One of the biggest stars of R&B, contemporary and straight-ahead jazz, he has earned a reputation as a “musician’s musician.”

Born in Los Angeles, he began piano lessons at an early age. His love of music flourished when he was given a saxophone that had belonged to his piano teacher. By the time he enrolled at the University of Redlands, he was already a polished saxophonist. He made the switch to bass guitar after seeing Louis Johnson in concert. A few months after graduating from college, he joined jazz pianist/R&B singer Patrice Rushen, who was forming her own band. Later, when the bass player left mid-tour, Albright replaced him, finishing the tour on bass guitar.

During the ’80s, Gerald became a highly requested session musician, playing on albums by a variety of artists including Anita Baker, Ray Parker, Lola Folana, Atlantic Starr, Olivia Newton-John, the Temptations, and Maurice White. He also toured extensively with Les McCann, Jeff Lorber, Teena Marie, the Winans, Marlena Shaw, Quincy Jones, and Whitney Houston, among many others.
He went on to record several successful solo albums for Atlantic Records. Two hit the #1 slot on Billboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz Chart, and were nominated for Grammy Awards in 1989 and 1990. Most recently, his “Sax for Stax” (Peak Records) received a 2009 Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album and “Pushing the Envelope” (Heads Up International) followed suit in the same category in 2010.

August 29th Smooth Cruises featuring Regina Belle

REGINA BELLE

Regina Bellw Smooth Cruise New YorkWhile four-time Grammy award winning R&B/Pop songstress and New Jersey native Regina Belle rode high on the urban charts in the ‘80s and ‘90s with such classics as “Baby Come to Me,” “Make It Like It Was” and “What Goes Around,” faith, churchgoing, and gospel music remained at the very core of her life in the spotlight. Today, Belle is a “reverse crossover” artist with gospel now in her repertoire.

Regina launched her music career when, as an 8-year-old, she performed her first church solo -- a take-no-prisoners rendition of the gospel standard “Don’t Drive Your Mama Away,” originally by Shirley Caesar, one of Belle’s early influences. Such was the youngster’s talent that, by age 12, she had her first professional gig, and, come high school, she received a full scholarship to attend the Manhattan School of Music.

While she cherishes the lessons learned there, something was amiss: the school’s rigid music-only curriculum left her wanting a better grasp of who she was and “a better of understanding of how the world works.” That desire to expand her horizons drove her to Rutgers University, where she majored in history and accounting, two careers she complemented with music courses at what is now the state college’s famed Mason Gross School of the Arts.

Twelve credits shy of her college graduation, she got the break of her lifetime when she received a call to audition for the Manhattans. They soon asked her to record a duet with them and be their opening act. “At that moment, it was like, goodbye school,” says Belle. “What I wanted to do was handed to me on a platter. All I had to do was walk through that door. I had to grow up real quick. That was my real training. The life work started to happen.”

It wasn’t long until Regina signed with Columbia Records, a successful partnership that yielded the albums “All By Myself,” “Stay With Me,” “Passion” and “Reaching Back.” “Stay With Me” went Gold (as did “Passion”) and catapulted Belle to #1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, a feat driven in part by two chart-topping singles, “Baby Come to Me” and “Make It Like It Was.”

The whirlwind of activity, accolades, and media attention eventually got the best of the singer, to the point that her gospel foundation was put on the backburner. Now, with her religious identity firmly in place, Belle’s 2008 “Love Forever Shines,” showcases her soulful voice set to the two styles that make up her musical persona: contemporary R&B and gospel music. The album landed at #15 on the 2008 Billboard R&B charts and at #3 on the Gospel charts.
